How to convert apparent power in kilovolt-amps (kVA) to power in watts (W)

The actual power *P*, in watts (W) in an electrical circuit is calculated by multiplying the apparent current *S*, in kilovolt-amps (kVA) by 1000, multiplied by the power factor *PF*.

*P*_{(W)} = 1000 × *S*_{(kVA)} × *PF*

Therefore:

Watts = the kilovolt-amps times 1000 times the power factor

watts = 1000 × kilovolt-amps × PF

Or

W = 1000 × kVA × PF

Calculate the real power in an electrical circuit, in watts, given that the power factor is 0.7 and the apparent power is 4kVA.

*P*_{(W)} = 1000 × *S*_{(kVA)} × *PF*

*P* = 1000 × 4kVA × 0.7 = 2800W
